By now, you’ve probably heard the exciting news that President-elect Joe Biden has selected California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

During his tenure as Attorney General, Xavier has fought back against the Trump administration at every turn, defending our healthcare, our environment, and protections for immigrants and LGBTQ+ Americans, to name a few of his successes. He was also the first state Attorney General to create an environmental justice bureau. Having had the privilege of knowing and working alongside Xavier for many years, there’s no one I trust more, or who is more deserving, to lead HHS at this critical moment for our country.

The people of California have long benefited from Xavier’s decades of public service, first as a member of the California State Assembly, then as a Representative in Congress, and currently as Attorney General, and soon enough, the entire nation will, too.

I’d like to extend my warmest congratulations to our next HHS Secretary and his family, and wish Xavier the very best as a member of the Biden Administration.
