John

Michigan has long lagged behind other states in unemployment insurance coverage, and with the Trump Recession looming, it's more important than ever that we stand up for working Michiganders.

Under Republican leadership a few years ago, the state made 50,000 false accusations of unemployment fraud against 40,000 Michigan workers – kicking tens of thousands of families when they were down, denying them the benefits they had earned, and putting the brakes on our economic growth.

The fact is, we have the worst unemployment insurance in the country, which hurts us in two ways:

  • Workers and jobs are less likely to come to Michigan than to surrounding states with better coverage, putting a drag on our economy
  • The upcoming Trump Recession will hit Michigan harder than other states, since strong unemployment coverage reduces the length and depth of an economic downturn and keeps more people in the workforce

Along with other Democrats in the State Legislature, I'm working hard to fix this. We've proposed a package of bills that will do three things:

  • Pay workers the unemployment insurance coverage they earned and were wrongly denied
  • Increase the penalties on companies that break the law by failing to pay for unemployment insurance
  • Bring Michigan's unemployment coverage in line with other states' so we can continue to attract good workers and good jobs

But the Republican politicians in Lansing are standing in the way of a stronger Michigan economy. They don't want to stand up for workers and hold accountable the companies that are abusing the system.

We need you with us! Will you invest $10 or more in Michigan's workers and our economy?

YOU DECIDE

I'm proud to stand with the working people of Downriver and Michigan, to stand up to companies abusing the system, and to stand for the strongest state economy we can build. I hope you'll stand with me.

Fighting Forward,
