Celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe
December 12, 2020

Dear Justice for Immigrants Friends and Supporters:
On December 12, 2020, we celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady
is Mexico's patron saint, Patroness of the Americas, and a symbol of love and strength
for Latin Americans and believers across the world.
Since 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe has called Catholics back to the faith and moved
others to embrace the faith. Today, Our Lady continues to empower our evangelization
efforts with her constant proclamation of the Gospel. Most importantly, as the Patroness
of the Americas and the Star of the First and New Evangelization, she calls us to
encounter and accompany the stranger in our midst. Our Lady of Guadalupe gives us
a model for how we, too, might reach out to and welcome those who seek better lives
here in our land. This message continues to be relevant for us today when our neighbors
include many of the world's most vulnerable people: immigrants and refugees fleeing
war, poverty and persecution, children who have experienced significant trauma from
violence and displacement, people who seek nothing more than basic needs and a path
forward. Just like us, they are children of God, deserving of dignity and love.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, celebrations this year may be muted or have limited
participation. Instead, on-line or virtual celebrations may take place in your local
diocese, parish, or school.
Please see the JFI toolkit [[link removed]]
developed for this occasion. We also suggest that you familiarize yourself with
the way in which other dioceses celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2020; these celebrations
might provide a useful model:

* The annual Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations hosted by the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles were celebrated virtually on Sunday, December 6, 2020 beginning with the
procession at 10:30 AM and Mass at the Mission San Gabriel at Noon. Recordings of
the livestreamed events are available on the Archdiocese's #GuadalupeLA [[link removed]]
website.
* The Archdiocese of Washington, DC, holds the annual Walk with Mary in honor of
our of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are invited to this year's virtual Walk with
Mary on December 12, 2020 at 1 PM ET. View the livestream from Cathedral of St.
Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC on the Archdiocese's website [[link removed]].
*
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe invites worshippers
to celebrate the occasion this year from their homes. The
schedule of celebrations [[link removed]]
on December 11th and 12th is available on the Shrine's event website.
* In the Diocese of Columbus, most parish programs will be scaled back from those
of past years because of the pandemic. Catholics are urged to watch the diocesan
Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration from Columbus St. Joseph Cathedral at 10 AM ET
on the feast day. It will be televised on WCMH-TV, Channel 4, broadcast on La Mega
103.1 FM radio and livestreamed on YouTube. Click here [[link removed]]
for parish and the diocesan Mass information.
* At Cathedral of the Madeleine in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, celebrations in
Spanish will begin on Friday, December 11 at 8:30 PM MT. The rosary will be recited
at 9:30 PM, and Mass with Bishop Oscar Solis presiding will be at 10 PM. Mass will
also be celebrated in English on Saturday, December 12th at 8 AM MT. Information
about the events is on the diocese's website [[link removed]].
* In the Diocese of Colorado Springs, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass will be celebrated

at Mass.
* In the Diocese of Phoenix, Mass will be celebrated on December 12th at 10
AM MT and live streamed from St. Mary's parish in Chandler, AZ. A procession
will follow the Mass. Click here for more information [[link removed]].
* Despite the pandemic, the Mission & Ministry Center (MMC) at St. Mary's College
(CA) will continue the now decade old tradition of celebrating the Feast of Our
Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. Celebrate from your homes on December
12th by joining via the MMC website [[link removed]].
Our Lady of Guadalupe provides an opportunity to reflect on the current migration
situation, educate others on Church teaching related to this phenomenon, and to
recognize the important role that she plays in the lives of millions of Catholic
faithful.
Join us in celebrating and honoring this important and holy day!
In solidarity,
Tony Cube
