ACT NOW: Demand immediate protection for environmental defender Jani Silva. | View in browser. They threatened me:"Old woman, don't get involved in what doesn’t concern you or you’ll die." People in my community told me, "Jani, you must hide because they’re looking for you. They are going to kill you." Dear John, Jani Silva braves enormous danger to speak up for clean water and the right to a healthy environment in the Amazon region of Colombia. She has challenged contamination by oil companies and pollution of the river so vital to local communities. Jani is at extreme risk now, amid death threats and an escalation of killings under cover of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jani spoke to Amnesty Canada just weeks ago. This is what she told us: “We want to raise awareness about the importance of our land, our environment, our trees and our animals…We are threatened and persecuted for protecting something that benefits all humanity…But we won’t give up.” Since Jani shared those inspiring words, she has had to go into hiding. The situation couldn’t be more urgent. Help us send a flood of messages to Colombian authorities that cannot be ignored >> Jani is one of 10 cases featured in this year’s Write for Rights campaign, Amnesty International’s biggest global day of action, in which people like you around the world send millions of letters, emails, petitions and solidarity messages together to demand justice. VIDEO: Watch Jani's story and take action >> Before Jani went into hiding, she told us: “We have to wake up to everything that is happening to environment protectors around the world. Your accompaniment is so very important.” Jani has never failed to raise her voice to protect a liveable future for all. Let’s raise our voices now to protect Jani. With hope, Kathy Price
