Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

This Thursday, educators and students are invited to join German children's TV host Christoph Biemann (Die Sendung mit der Maus) for the next virtual Green Academy lecture: "Air Is Not Nothing." Grab a bucket of water and a glass, and learn how German and science can go together! Additionally, materials to a new virtual module for educators of German – "Grün, Bunt, Gesund" – is available for access. Virtual options for digital German for Hire and SPARK in 2021 can also be found below!

Our 2020 edition of Film|Neu is officially over, after our postponed screening of Narcissus and Goldmund ran this past week. We would like to thank our partners and everybody who tuned in to our free, virtual festival this year. Coming up this week, our Radical Diversity discussion series heads to Boston, and our next episode Counter Memories series is coming from Kansas City.

Virtual Dialogue

Counter Memories: Glenn North & Staci Pratt

The conversation series Counter Memories will investigate a number of international monuments and places of remembrance whose symbolic significance often reveals a great deal about our relationship to history. The Goethe-Institutes in North America, the Goethe Pop Up Kansas City, the Thomas Mann House, and Onassis LA will convene artists, activists, and intellectuals for illustrated virtual conversations around historical memory.

The Kansas City episode is now online. This Counter-Memories episode centers around the story of the Levi Harrington Memorial Marker as an example of how a local initiative in Kansas City is attempting to remember the countless victims of lynchings and create historical memory. It's comprised of a conversation between Glenn North and Staci Pratt, the two founders of the Community Remembrance Project of Missouri, and journalist Amira El Ahl. Their conversation will be enriched through spoken word performances and illustrated with videos, images, and archival material.

Virtual Film Festival

Film|Neu 2020: That's A Wrap!

That's a wrap on Film|Neu 2020!

In our 28th annual Film|Neu festival – and first entirely virtual edition of Film|Neu – we presented twelve films from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria: three German documentaries (Island of the Hungry GhostsAutomotive, and Lovemobil), four German feature films (Fritzi – A Revolutionary TaleSealed LipsPréludeNarcissus and Goldmund, and Gipsy Queen), two Austrian feature films (Why Not You and Stroke of Luck), one Swiss feature film (Vagenda Stories), and one Swiss short film (Caught Out).

We are so delighted that, in spite of the challenges this year has brought, we have been able to bring these excellent films cost-free to our community. Thank you to everybody who streamed our offerings and supported our programming. Not only has your support of our streaming festival fostered great success for Film|Neu 2020 – but for Film|Neu overall, with nearly 4,000 views across the DC/MD/VA region and beyond.

The Goethe-Institut Washington is greatly thankful for its partners, the Austrian Cultural Forum Washington and the Embassy of Switzerland in the United States. Many thanks also to DC Shorts International Film Festival, German Films, German Documentaries, and the German Film Office in New York.

We look forward to presenting a hybrid festival in 2021, with streaming and in-person options alike.

Thank you all again for a wonderful Film|Neu, and we look forward to welcoming you to our 29th Film|Neu next year!

Radical Diversity: Boston

Join us for the next edition of Radical Diversity, a discussion series presented by several Goethe-Institut locations in North America. In the Boston edition of Radical Diversity, Max Czollek and Mohamed Amjahid speak with an anthropologist and an award-winning podcaster about the role of Jewish and Muslim communities in contemporary society. Researcher Sultan Doughan and journalist/podcaster Rachael Cerrotti approach the subject from very different perspectives: one is scientific, one is personal.
