LULAC Says It Supports Xavier Becerra Nomination For HHS
========================================================
Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Says Health and
Human Service Agency Is Facing Historic Challenges with COVID-19
Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today
issued the following statement on the reported selection of California Attorney
General Xavier Becerra to the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services
by President-elect Joe Biden:
Domingo Garcia - LULAC National President
“LULAC strongly supports President-elect Biden selection of Xavier Becerra to
lead this important agency as it faces one of its most critical challenges amid a
spreading pandemic that has already infected 14.8 million Americans and claimed
the lives of more than 282,000 others in our country. Mr. Becerra’s decades of
public service experience, both as a U.S. Congressman and Attorney General of
California have prepared him well to take on this important job. He has the
skills and ability required to make the difficult decisions and an ability to
lead a vast agency that reaches every community of the United States and Puerto
Rico. LULAC and I have worked for many years with the Congressman, then Attorney
General Becerra and find him to be someone who is willing to listen, consider and
act in the best interest of all communities and individuals at greatest need
including access to quality healthcare and vital social services. LULAC looks
forward to working with a leader who has a genuine interest in helping those most
vulnerable and who are suffering the most.”
Sindy Benavides - LULAC National Chief Executive Officer
“We are elated President-elect Biden has nominated CA Attorney General Xavier
Becerra as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. In his
current role, he has been at the helm of a coalition with 20 states in support of
the Affordable Care Act which speaks volumes about his sincere and deep concern
for fairness and an America that acknowledges the safety and well-being of every
man, woman and child in our country. The cascade of suffering due to Covid-19 and
health inequities that Latinos, African Americans, and Native Americans have been
enduring for months in concentrated inner-city and urban centers, is spilling
with ferocity into other regions across the Midwest, Appalachia and the
Southeast. This makes the role of the Secretary of HHS one of the most critical
in the Administration of President Biden. LULAC has worked with nominee-Becerra
over many years and considers him a good friend of the Latino community. He is a
public servant who will do the same for people in every neighborhood, city and
state across the country and Puerto Rico. We will be there ready to join him and
support him through the confirmation process.”
