Hi John,

The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent highlighted that “a Republican victory in Georgia… would also validate the GOP’s use of declaring the election’s outcome illegitimate as a successful political tactic. That’s yet another way the stakes of these runoffs are so high -- along with whether we get an ambitious governmental response to the profound crises we face.”

Republicans in Georgia were quick to support Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud in the state. And if they win in January, they won’t just keep control of the Senate, but they’ll be able to sow even more distrust in our electoral process, undermining the voting rights of Black Americans who drove Biden’s victory in the state.

And Mitch McConnell couldn’t be happier. The Senate grim reaper has used his position to block progressive legislation for decades -- just imagine how he’ll feel if he can keep the power to block Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’ attempts to restore the Voting Rights Act, reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, or expand funding for their coronavirus response efforts.

But before Mitch gets carried away with his plans, let’s remember one thing: We can take back the Senate in January by supporting grassroots organizers like Stacey Abrams, turning out the vote in marginalized communities, and reminding Americans what’s at stake if we don’t win both races -- especially as Jon Ossoff grows increasingly vulnerable. But with such a huge task, we’ll need all hands on deck.
