Pro-LGBT Democrats Set Eyes on Flipping Texas House

This past legislative session saw the formation of the first-ever LGBTQ caucus in the Texas House. While the caucus ultimately failed at stopping the Save Chick-fil-A Religious Freedom Act from becoming law, LGBT advocates have now outlined their plans to turn Texas blue by targeting several Texas House seats in North Texas. After flipping 12 House seats in 2018, Texas Democrats would only need to flip 9 seats in 2020 to take the Texas House.

As our 2019 Faith & Family Scorecard clearly shows, this would be disastrous for the future of family values in Texas. All 5 members of the LGBTQ Caucus scored 0% by voting against religious freedom, marriage & family, and life on every vote included in our scorecard. This includes two freshmen Democrats that defeated Republicans in 2018: Rep. Julie Johnson (HD 114) in Dallas County and Rep. Erin Zwiener (HD 45) in Hays and Blanco County.

Texas Values Action is committed to holding elected officials accountable for their voting record and to supporting candidates that will protect pro-family values. Arizona Religious Freedom Victory

In a decision with national implications, the Arizona Supreme Court handed down a victory for free speech and religious freedom this week. The Court ruled a Phoenix “Ban the Bible” style ordinance forcing Christian artists to create custom wedding invitations for same-sex weddings violates the law. Our family policy allies in Arizona, the Center for Arizona Policy, note the court made clear the government “must not be allowed to force persons to express a message contrary to their deepest convictions.”

Sen. Donna Campbell Joins Program

On the most recent edition of the Texas Values Report, Sen. Donna Campbell, a 2019 Faith & Family Champion, joined our Director of Policy Nicole Hudgens to discuss a new budget amendment passed in Austin that would provide $150,000 of taxpayer funds to support abortion. Sen. Campbell was the author of SB 22, a pro-life law that prohibits taxpayer funds from being used to fund abortion providers or their affiliates. Did Austin break the law? Tune in to find out! Listen here.
