As we enter the next election cycle, we wanted to check in with you about what we’ve learned.
In 2020, a record number of women ran for office, with more women of color running than ever before. That in itself is powerful. Through grassroots support, Cori Bush became the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress. New Mexico became the first state to elect all women of color to the House. And, for the first time in history, women see themselves reflected in our vice president.
We knew this widespread change was possible when we started our work to reshape the government and elect more women to positions of power -- especially with the support of people like you.
Today, we’re more energized than ever before to continue the long-term fight for equal representation. As FiveThirtyEight reports, “reducing the gender gap in elected office-holders is more complicated than simply getting more women to run.” We need to support women each step of the way and ensure that women are seen as viable candidates in a system created to keep them out.
Our work makes a difference. FiveThirtyEight’s research shows that “endorsements (and the financial backing that tends to come with them) can be crucial to addressing underrepresentation among women in political office.”
But John, we need to expand our funds quickly if we’re going to support the next generation of women preparing to run for office at the state and federal levels, especially in a time where women are facing increased harassment and threats for changing the “status quo.”
We know that we have the power to break down the systems that hold women back and build a government that is reflective of the diversity of our country -- but we can’t do it alone.
