MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS December 1 - December 7, 2020 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch The Missile Defense Mondays Video On Monday, it was reported that the Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kazan successfully test-fired an Oniks cruise missile. The test took place in the White Sea as a part of the final stage of state trials. Also on Monday, it was reported the South Korean Air Force took the delivery of the first Cheongung II missile defense system. The mid-range surface-to-air guided missile is set to replace South Korea's MIM-23 HAWK air defense systems. On Tuesday, it was announced that the Russian S-300V4 defense missile system entered combat duty on the disputed Kuril Islands north of Japan. Shortly after, the Japanese government lodged a protest over the deployment. Also on Tuesday, it was reported that construction on a new Arleigh-Burke class destroyer had begun in Bath, Maine. The destroyer, the USS William Charette, will be a Flight III version equipped with SPY-6 and Aegis Baseline 10 for integrated air and ballistic missile defense. On Wednesday, Lockheed Martin announced that it had completed construction of the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) GEO 5 satellite. The satellite is set for launch in 2021 and will be followed by the SBIRS GEO-6 satellite in 2022. On Thursday, it was announced that the U.S. had approved a possible Foreign Military Sale of two Phalanx Close-In Weapons Systems to South Korea. Its development began in 1983, and it became operational in 2002. The missile launches from a vertical position and uses angular thrusters located near the nose to reposition itself horizontally... MISSILE DEFENDER OF THE WEEK First Lieutenant Kyle Rehberg 1LT Rehberg is a native of Hainesville, Illinois. He enlisted in 2011 in the Florida Army National Guard in the Simulations Membership Program and went to Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Upon graduating Basic Combat Training, he was assigned to the 1218th Transportation Company in West Palm Beach, Florida. 1LT Rehberg commissioned in 2015 through the Reserved Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program at Palm Beach Atlantic University as a Military Police Office and was assigned as a Platoon Leader in the 715th Military Police Company in Melbourne, Florida. In 2018, 1LT Rehberg accepted a position as a Sensor Operator in HHB, 49th Missile Defense Battalion at Fort Greely, Alaska. In 2019, he transitioned to Higher Headquarters Battery (HHB), 49th Missile Defense Battalion where he is assigned as Deputy Director for Echo Crew. 1LT Rehberg’s prior assignments include: Sensor Operator, Higher Headquarters Battery, 49th Missile Defense Battalion, Fort Greely, Alaska; Platoon Leader, 715th Military Police Company (CS), Melbourne, Florida. His military education/courses include: Introduction to Space, Ground-based Midcourse Defense Qualification Course, Air Defense Artillery Transition Course, and Military Police Basic Officer Leaders Course. He holds a Baccalaureate degree in Political Science from Palm Beach Atlantic University. His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
