John,

After four long, arduous years, we won a historic victory last month when the American people overwhelmingly elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President of the United States. Voters across our country choose empathy, inclusion, and leadership over division and incompetence. Despite having to defend dozens of seats in districts that Trump won — and having to play defense on some very difficult turf here in California — we held our Democratic House Majority. We are now ready to help advance our Democratic agenda as soon as President Biden is sworn in on January 20th.

None of this would have been possible without you and everything you did — even throughout the pandemic — to, truly, save our country. You generously gave your time, your advice, and your resources. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

I also want to acknowledge the frustration expressed to me by many of my friends and supporters about “what happened” in House, Senate, and state legislative races across the country that we lost. I very much share those feelings with you. Based on polling data relied on by both parties, most of us woke up on Election Day expecting a “Blue Wave” similar to 2018 — where we would not only win the White House, but we would also increase our Democratic Majority in the House, flip the Senate, and win back key state houses so we could have significant influence over redistricting for the next decade. That did not happen.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not someone who points fingers. But I am someone who always wants answers. Personally, I have been giving "what happened" a lot of thought over the past few weeks.

In the weeks and months ahead, I will continue to insist that the DCCC and our House Democratic Caucus — and, I hope, our friends on the Senate side as well — invest the time and resources to really examine what went wrong, what needs to be adjusted, and where we go from here. We have a short window to right the ship before the midterms begin. We owe it to our voters and to our country to get it right. I personally owe that to you for everything you did to help me.

Even in the most frustrating of times, I try to remain ever the optimist.

Now we look to the January 5th runoffs in Georgia where we have a chance to win a narrow Democratic majority in the Senate. I hope you will take a moment to visit my website to see how you can help [[link removed]] — even from the safety and comfort of your home – to win these two seats and the Senate majority. My campaign and leadership PAC has already made the maximum contributions.

On a personal note, I also want to thank you for your incredibly generous support of me, my re-election campaign, and my work as Chair of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation. It is an honor to represent my friends, neighbors, and constituents in Washington — and my resolve to defend our shared values in Congress is stronger than ever.

I am very grateful to know that I can count on your support, advice, and encouragement as we face the work ahead.

I would normally say “let’s celebrate our hard-earned election victories and enjoy some downtime during the quickly approaching holiday season” — but, for right now, we have to stay focused on Georgia. Hopefully then we can celebrate — virtually — together!

Thank you once again for everything — and especially for your friendship.

I hope you will stay safe and healthy during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. And I wish you and your family a very happy holiday season at home.
