Eviction is a public health crisis.
There are resources to help.

Did you know up to 30% of rental units in the city are behind on their rent and subject to possible eviction in January?

Renters in low income neighborhoods have a 25% higher chance of experiencing eviction or other housing displacement. Property owners are expected to file a wave of evictions in January. This is an enormous threat to the health of vulnerable families, especially during a pandemic.

Where can I go to help pay my back rent?

Call 2-1-1 before December 11th

The City of Rochester and Monroe County have implemented an Emergency Rent Assistance program which can cover back rent.

Rent assistance funding is limited, and families are encouraged to sign up by December 11th to receive the most possible benefit from these services.
What if I'm at risk of being evicted?

You could have access to a free lawyer

The Tenant Defense Project provides all tenants with access to a free lawyer in court. Call 2-1-1 to speak with an intake specialist at the 2-1-1/Lifeline Call Center.
What should I expect when calling 2-1-1?
A 2-1-1 intake specialist will ask a series of questions about your living and employment status to help identify any support programs that you may be qualified for, including Emergency Rent Assistance. The specialist will help start your application and hand it off to the appropriate agency to complete your enrollment.

The 2-1-1 line also has a callback option, providing callers a solution to avoid waiting on hold.

General questions about housing issues and resources can be directed to the Housing Hotline operated by the Housing Council at PathStone. Call (585) 546-3700 between 9am and 1pm weekdays.
