Week of December 7, 2020

The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real— it's surging to record levels in Los Angeles, the US, and the world.

We need to be extra vigilant and mitigate the risks of infection, particularly for those who are older or who have pre-existing conditions. For the sake of our collective health, please remember to wear a mask when you leave your home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. This pandemic has shown us that the health of one is the health of all so we all need to take responsibility for our common well-being.

There are some easy ways to safely stay connected to the chapter, such as: signing-up on the front page of our website to receive our weekly newsletter, checking the calendar on the site for upcoming virtual events, and joining DSA-LA’s Slack.

In solidarity,

DSA-LA

Organize Your Neighborhood With DSA-LA!

Image

In March 2020, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, DSA launched a program called the Neighborhood Solidarity Network in order to connect our members with each other on a neighborhood-by neighborhood basis. It was incredibly successful in developing comradely relationships and making sure we could easily share updates about Chapter strategies.

Now, we’re expanding the program and re-branding it slightly. You’re invited to organize your neighborhood with DSA-LA!

Street Watch organizes neighborhood by neighborhood and we want to connect with all interested members to make plans for organizing in South Central and Inglewood. We’ll spend half of the meeting doing an introduction to Street Watch, and the other half making plans for next steps to start doing the work, including assessing which neighborhoods have the highest need and the highest density of interested members.

Tuesday, December 8th @ 6:00PM

The Facilitator Training, hosted by the Political Education Committee, will teach you techniques for leading groups discussions, both online and in person.

The key questions that will be answered by this training are:

  • Why is political education important?
  • What is the role of the facilitator?
  • What are concrete tools to facilitate?
  • How can I address common roadblocks to a conversation that flows?

The skills and tools covered in this training are applicable in any meeting where participants will be discussing new ideas, so we welcome anyone interested in learning more about facilitation.

Sunday, December 13th @ 5:30PM–10:00PM

Join the Mutual Aid Committee’s Prisoner Outreach Solidarity Team as we write December birthday letters to political prisoners and prisoners of war. If you can’t join us, you can always , and write letters on your own!

After that, starting at 7 PM, we’ll have a Special Bylaws Voting Party, where we can come together as a committee to discuss and vote on amendments to our committee bylaws. If you would like to submit proposed amendments yourself, please get them to us by Friday, December 4 so we have enough time to distribute them to committee membership. You will need to be a committee member in good standing in order to vote at this meeting.
