While much of the country is focused on saving lives amid a global pandemic, a small number of states continue to carry out executions.

As Conservatives we must stand up for life.

Take the case of Ruben Gutierrez. He awaits execution in Texas and his case is as abysmal as it is common.

In the initial investigations, police coerced a confession from Gutierrez by threatening to arrest his wife and take away his children. Gutierrez quickly recanted and has maintained his innocence for over two decades, most of it spent in solitary confinement. There is no physical or forensic evidence tying Guttierez to the case. There is DNA evidence that could exonerate him - DNA evidence the state is refusing to test.

Gutierrez is not alone. Coerced confessions are a notorious and egregious problem in our system. In fact, one out of four wrongful convictions overturned by DNA evidence has involved a false confession, according to the Innocence Project.

It's shocking how little proof is needed to sentence a man to die.

In Texas and across the country, innocent life can be so easily snuffed out at the hands of the government. How quickly our constitutional rights are disregarded, and how little concern many have for the sanctity of human life and individual liberty.
