What to Know: In a Facebook video posted November 9th, Austin mayor Steve Adler urged the public “to stay home…We need to keep the numbers down. Now is not the time to relax.” The mayor failed to mention that he was on vacation in Cabo San Lucas accompanied by eight others at the time of the recording. What’s more, a few days prior “Adler hosted a wedding and reception at Hotel Saint Cecilia, a South Congress Avenue hotel, for his daughter with 20 guests.”

The TPPF Take: Local officials who flout their own COVID rules are hypocritical and elitist.

“Some local officials seem content to live by George Orwell’s maxim that ‘all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.’ But that attitude has no place in Texas government. Not now or ever,” said TPPF’s James Quintero.

Civics Education

What to Know: Students in Boston are suing their schools over the lack of civics education.

The TPPF Take: Civics education is necessary to ensure a functioning republic.

“Civics education and history, rightly done, would employ a Founding-documents-based curriculum to focus on our polity’s core principles of human equality and individual liberty,” says TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “This focus should proceed through examination of fundamental documents and major speeches.”

What to Know: Homelessness continues to increase in Texas cities.

The TPPF Take: Homelessness is a complex problem requiring thoughtful solutions.

“The rise in homelessness in recent years has led communities and policy makers throughout Texas to wrestle with the particularly difficult question of determining the root causes of homelessness and the best way to reduce the number of people who are left on the streets,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown.
