Biden Fulfilling Promise for a Diverse Administration

In a June 10 column in USA Today, Joe Biden said: “Across the board – from our classrooms to our courtrooms to the president’s Cabinet – we have to make sure that our leadership and our institutions actually look like America.” As Biden rolls out picks for the advisors and administrators who will make up his government, it's clear he is living up to his principles. Before the election he selected Kamala Harris, who is a woman of African American and South Asia descent, to serve as his Vice President, and her ascent to her office alone is enough to mark the Biden administration as perhaps the most diverse in history. Biden, however, is continuing to fill key roles in diplomacy, intelligence, health, communication and the rest of government with supremely qualified people of all genders and ethnicities. For instance he has tapped his longtime aide Kate Bedingfield to head an all-female communications team featuring veteran Democratic spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki as White House Press Secretary.

For a list of who Biden has selected so far, see the NPR article here. For a story on who may be selected next, see the Politico article here.

Beasley Requests Hand Recount: NHCDP Supports Recount and Protest

Chief Justice Cheri Beasley has requested a hand recount of the Chief Justice race and has filed a protest seeking to count ballots rejected by the Board of Elections. After the first recount conducted by optical scanners she was found to be behind statewide by only 401 votes. Now, hand recounts will occur statewide in 3% of precincts.  In New Hanover this recount will initially only include Precincts FP08 and H03.  If the results of the hand recount change the results in an amount that would change the outcome if extrapolated over the entire electorate, then a 100% hand recount will be conducted.  At this writing the date and time for the New Hanover recount have not been set.  Wednesday December 9th at 1 pm is under discussion. Click here for more information on the recount.

The election protest will be heard this afternoon. See details below. The New Hanover County Democratic Party has worked hard to support Chief Justice Beasley's protest. The margin is so small  (.00007) that it is entirely possible that the recount can change the result. New Hanover Democrats will fight for Cheri Beasley till this race is decided. If you feel strongly about retaining the first female African American Chief Justice in North Carolina history, please consider attending the protest hearing today.
