Trump Threatens to Veto Defense Bill Over #DiaperDon
President Donald Trump is threatening to veto an annual national defense authorization bill if Congress excludes an overhaul of liability protections for social media platforms under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
Section 230 protects tech giants like Facebook and Twitter from being held legally liable for the content posted on their platforms.
In late November, Trump claimed Twitter was “sending out totally false trends” before stating section 230 should be terminated in the interests of “national security."
The president made his claims in the wake of #DiaperDon trending on Twitter after 45 was photographed at a small table on Thanksgiving:
As the # went viral, Trump tweeted:
"For purposes of National Security, Section 230 must be immediately terminated!!!"
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pushed back on Trump’s demand, saying that the repeal of Section 230 was irrelevant to the passage of the Pentagon’s top bill.
In response, Trump tweeted the veto threat and expressed his frustration with Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe (R-OK):
"Very sadly for our Nation, it looks like Senate @JimInhofe will not be putting the Section 230 termination clause into the Defense Bill. So bad for our National Security and Election Integrity. Last chance to ever get it done. I will VETO!"
Should Trump veto the NDAA?
