We saw record voter turnout in the November election. We also saw record voter suppression.

Voter suppression is real, and it's robbing the American people of a voice in our democracy. Purging voter rolls, denying people access to their ballots, forcing voters to wait in long lines, requiring IDs, and other nefarious and intentional restrictions have all created barriers to the ballot box.

It's true that many states stepped up this year to make it easier for people to vote safely. But unfortunately, many politicians — including President Trump — have used the pandemic to try and further suppress the vote.

Derek co-sponsored the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to expand access to the ballot box and to make sure every eligible voter can make his or her voice heard safely. Since Election Day, Donald Trump has called for hundreds and thousands of mail-in ballots to be thrown out. His request would have disenfranchised millions of Black voters in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Detroit — and thankfully, his baseless claims of voter fraud have been repeatedly shot down in court.

Widespread claims of voter fraud have been debunked repeatedly, most recently by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University and Arizona State University — just to name a few. In fact, November's election was the most secure election in American history. Meanwhile, voter suppression is sadly alive and well — and it's hurting our democracy.

It's simple, friend: we need to put the teeth back into the Voting Rights Act. Derek supports restoring FULL voter protections to strengthen our democracy. To join him, add your name as a co-sponsor of the John Lewis VRAA.
