As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. --Gary
The emotions of the last several weeks have been wide-ranging . . . hopeful, anxious, excited, angry, disappointed, resigned, and even optimistic at times. The list goes on in an effort to capture the mood of a topsy turvy post-election season which continues to this day.
Though the outcome is still muddled, I suspect you would agree that President Trump's fighting spirit is most welcome as it shines a bright light on election fraud and irregularities. I am thankful that he is not just focused on the 2020 outcome, but is committed to safe and fair elections in the future.
We must not forget that after four years of negative press coverage, often based on lies or innuendoes, the Trump-Pence ticket received over 74 million votes, an astonishing number and more than the previous popular vote record of Barack Obama.
The COVID-19 pandemic laid the groundwork for massive election law changes resulting in tens of millions of unsolicited mail-in ballots being sent to names on voter rolls which were not up to date and included the deceased, people who had moved long ago, unqualified voters, etc.
I find it suspicious that the Biden campaign shows no interest in the process of ensuring election integrity. Why wouldn't they want all Americans to feel that their candidate won fairly by opening investigations and answering wide-ranging charges with proof?
After the election, a shocking 70% of Republicans don't believe the 2020 election was free and fair. That number is up from 35% prior to the election. And another poll revealed that a surprising 30% of Democrats believe it is likely the election was stolen from President Trump!
These figures undermine confidence in our electoral process. Should Joe Biden be inaugurated, he will become president under a cloud of distrust resulting in a tenuous hold on the office. This does not point to a thriving and healthy republic.
The nation finds itself at a precarious juncture. This election season was marked by slanted press coverage that treated one candidate with open hostility while the other received fawning coverage. The president's frequent press conferences were marked by yelling, smarmy questions and a generally unprofessional demeanor from the White House press corps.
In contrast, Joe Biden was seldom available, and when he was just a handful of pre-selected reporters were called on to ask approved questions with no follow-up. It was a lovefest compared to the president's dog-eat-dog events.
Social media was equally slanted by not only how news was covered but by blatant instances where major news stories hurtful to Democrats were not covered at all. Even more worrisome, those who choose to point out this unfairness are marked for public shaming in today's growing "cancel culture."
This is not healthy. It is not the country I thought I knew and not the country we describe to our grandchildren. Our founding principles and values are being challenged before our eyes in real time. What is the answer?
In these discouraging days, I find hope in those whose eyes have been opened and who have a will to make a difference. So many are the regular folks who saw cheating and under oath reported it. They are not politicians with an axe to grind. But that's only part of the story. There's more to come.
As I look outside at barren flower gardens, I find hope in the knowledge that the Master's creation may look lifeless to my eyes but beneath the surface and unseen to the human eye new life and vitality is stirring and will emerge in the months ahead.
I am trusting God that the frightening irregularities we have seen will lead the right people to join the president and take on a broad effort to secure our electoral process. Right now we are seeing the fruits of those who took advantage of a pandemic-plagued election cycle. But that is not the end of the story. It lays the groundwork for what will happen in months and years ahead.
Today's travesty of an election must be corrected. It must be done for future generations of Americans. Our very survival depends on it.
Join me in asking God for guidance in the days ahead. Pray that He will illuminate our road pointing to those actions which will be successful in cleaning up the electoral mess in which we find ourselves. Ask Him to shut down avenues that will not prove fruitful and shine a light on electoral changes that will ensure fairness.
Ask Him to prompt those with firsthand knowledge of cheating to come forward into the light of day. And pray that He would open the minds of judges and legislators to see illegal efforts. May they be brave enough to see the truth and seek remedies which may be unconventional but which would restore faith in our governance. Prompt each of us to the realization that lack of initiative and lack of action now will result in an uncertain future for what has been a vibrant republic.
With the Christmas season upon us, I pray you will find comfort in the joy of the season and the hope it brings to believers. To remember the reason for the season is to remember the words of the old hymn: "There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul." Jesus is that balm. Seek Him! Blessed Christmas!
