Donald Trump is using his last days in office to help himself and his loyalists walk away scot-free, and he’s made his grand pardoning debut by absolving Michael Flynn of “any and all possible offenses.”
Flynn, who has pleaded guilty to many abuses of power in open court, played a central role in befriending and reassuring Russia after Putin’s government attacked our electoral system to put Trump in power in 2016. As if that wasn’t enough, he later lied to the FBI about his actions on Trump’s behalf.
As MSNBC’s Steve Benen puts it, “Flynn committed a felony to benefit Trump, and then Trump used his power to shield Flynn from any consequences for his crimes. This is clearly not why the presidential pardon power is supposed to exist. On the contrary, it sets a precedent for presidential lawlessness.”
