Hi friend --
Washington Post: “26 million now say they don’t have enough to eat, as the pandemic worsens and holidays near.”
That’s right: More Americans are hungry now than any time since the Census Bureau began collecting data. Like so many things, the consequences of hunger have been disproportionate. According to the Post, “The growth in hunger rates has hit Hispanic and Black households harder than White ones, a devastating consequence of a weak economy that has left so many people trying to secure food even during dangerous conditions.”
House Democrats passed the HEROES Act way back in May. The bill would grow the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, by 15%. It would help schools provide low-income students with fresh fruits and veggies. It would provide another round of cash relief to Americans and their families. It would make a world of difference.
It would, but it hasn’t yet -- because Republicans haven’t let it pass, and they haven’t passed any other relief in the meantime. Now our friends and neighbors are starving. If Republicans keep the Senate in 2021, do you think things will change for the better just because Donald Trump is no longer in office?
They won’t. Things won’t change unless we demand it. But right now, we aren’t doing everything we could be to push for the passage of the HEROES Act and relief packages like it. The reason is simple: Our funds are too low to effectively push for change.
