Hi John,
This month's Run for Something Roundup theme is
infrastructure.
Not roadways, bridges, canals, or train tracks --
political infrastructure.
Let me set the stage: Democrats have and will continue to spend millions to win federal seats. In fact, 2020 was the
most expensive political cycle in history: a whopping $14 billion spent by campaigns up and down the ballot.
But, even though we outraised and outspent Republicans nationally, Democrats lost seats in the House, underperformed in the Senate, and failed to flip
any statehouses ahead of redistricting.
One big reason all this spending couldn't deliver the power we need is because the Democratic Party's political infrastructure is crumbling and desperately needs to be rebuilt. We can't just spend billions on advertising in individual races and expect to win lasting power.
Why? Because every campaign has an end date and when they do (in a lot of cases, but not all) the community outreach stops, the relationship between leaders and voters begins to erode, and activists have fewer opportunities to channel their energy into the fight for progress.
So, we need to build something that lasts, John.
We need to build and foster political engagement that doesn't disappear after Election Day.
We need programs that recruit and train Democrats to run for office and fight for progress EVERY year, at EVERY level, in EVERY community.
And we need to direct the generosity of grassroots donors into year-round organizing and local campaigns in all 50 states.
When you empower communities to fight for progress and support young, diverse progressives to, ahem, Run for Something -- our crumbling political infrastructure can be replaced with a better one.
One that secures sustainable, permanent power for Democrats.
That's what Run for Something is working towards, but it won't happen overnight.
It happens by getting involved and invested early, showing up every day, and winning a lot of local elections.
And that all starts and ends with you! Right now, the best thing that you can do is to stay engaged any way that you can. And we've got some great content to help you do just that >>>
