John,
Right now, student loan debt in the U.S. is a $1,700,000,000,000 — that's 1.7 trillion dollars! — burden on 45 million Americans. Many of these Americans are working class, disproportionately impacting Black and brown communities, exacerbating economic inequality, and making it virtually impossible to build wealth.
And now, with the coronavirus pandemic and record unemployment, so many folks have to make the impossible choice between keeping a roof over their heads and putting food on the table...or making their student loan payment.
President-elect Joe Biden can use the power of his office starting January 20, 2021 to cancel student loan debt, once and for all. But it's on us to speak up now to send a clear message to the incoming administration that this is something that our communities demand from Day One: policies that match the scale of the crises we face.
Removing the massive burden of student loans would have immediate effects on our economy. Not only would it contribute to an equitable economic recovery from COVID-19, it will also help close the racial wealth gap.
This is not the time for half measures, John. We must cancel ALL student debt — and we have to insist that it happens as soon as the Biden-Harris administration takes office. Add your name to our petition now and join tens of thousands of others to demand that President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris cancel student debt.
Thanks for all that you do,
Team Bowman
