I’m Matt Thompson, Reveal’s editor in chief.

If you’ve been tuning in to our coverage this year, you’ve gotten reporting that takes you deep into the forces driving Americans apart. Just as important, you’ve heard stories about the challenges we face that don’t care about our divides – such as a worsening environment, the exploding spread of a lethal pandemic, a surge of global migration spurred by violent oppression and dwindling resources.

The work we do takes an enormous expenditure of time and resources. But we work hard to tell these stories because we see every day that arming people with facts helps them live better lives.

For example, to understand the national toll of rehab programs that require patients to labor under strenuous conditions with minimal treatment and no pay, our reporters spent three years traveling the country, calling or visiting hundreds of facilities and their patients, and immersing themselves in archival records, legal documents and financial statements. What emerged from this pursuit was our first multichapter serial podcast, American Rehab ([link removed]) , which revealed for the first time that in recent years, at least 60,000 people a year have attended one of these programs at more than 300 facilities in 44 states.
