Lifting Us All: Working Toward a Hunger-Free America & How You Can Help This December
Hunger Free America released its Annual Hunger Report last Wednesday right before Thanksgiving and held a virtual press conference with elected officials and other anti-hunger advocates. This year's report details the soaring demand at feeding programs across the country, with food pantries and soup kitchens experiencing a nearly 15 percent increase in 2020. Yet those served by charitable food programs were still dwarfed by the impact of the federally-funded SNAP (formerly Food Stamp) Program. Be sure to watch the video above where we discuss our findings with Senator Kristen Gillibrand, Representatives Jim McGovern and Joe Morelle, and Chef Tom Colicchio.

Giving Tuesday Was A Success!

Thank You For Your Support
Giving Tuesday was a success! We raised over $4,000 to expand our national SNAP and WIC outreach, enlist more anti-hunger advocates and volunteers nationwide, and prepare anti-poverty policy proposals for elected officials. Chef Tom Colicchio supported our Giving Tuesday campaign by hosting a free recipe demo on IG live, featuring HFA CEO Joel Berg.

Save the Date! MLK Serve-a-Thon 2021
Martin Luther King Jr. was an unremitting force in the fight against poverty, racial apartheid, and hunger. To honor his legacy, Hunger Free America hosts a service event every year on MLK Day to inspire Americans to engage in community service. Mark your calendars for Monday, January 18th and Tuesday, January 19th and join us for one of our workshops or a virtual volunteer opportunity.

Americans have been waiting over 200 days for a second stimulus package that would provide food assistance and direct aid to struggling families. Extended unemployment benefits and eviction moratoriums are set to expire at the end of December, just as the country faces a potential second lockdown and increased job loss in many states. Sign our petition to Congress to pass the Heroes Act NOW to ensure working adults, children, and seniors have access to the assistance they need to get through the pandemic.

Read Joel Berg's Op-Ed in The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Devastating poverty is the bridge that joins Pennsylvania’s rural counties and urban cities. A bold national strategy to boost economic opportunity and mobility in the most impoverished rural and urban counties can help bridge this deep divide."

Hunger Free America's National Survey of low-income Americans (those with a household income of $50,000/year or less) found broad, bipartisan support for anti-poverty policies. Survey respondents cited higher wages, lower health care costs, and a guaranteed living-wage job as the most important policies needed to end poverty in America. Crucially, survey respondents were racially diverse, represented rural, urban, and suburban districts, and voted for both major political parties, demonstrating that support for anti-poverty solutions is bipartisan. 50% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that low-wage jobs are the reason they cannot achieve economic wellbeing.
