** Water Drops
------------------------------------------------------------
November 21st, 2020

Climbing, crawling, carrying. Every time that we go out on our treks brings a new and different experience, even if we're returning to familiar places. Our two groups of volunteers were out from sun up to sun down, taking advantage of every last bit of daylight.

The supplies we leave during these cold seasons are water gallons, pop-top canned food, socks, beanies, gloves, flannel shirts/thermal base layers. Donations of these items are greatly appreciated. If you can't donate, we appreciate you sharing our social media posts!

Thank you to everyone who has continued to show up on a regular basis. Thank you everyone for reaching out about volunteering, and for your support and understanding during the pandemic. As soon as it’s safe for us to start taking larger groups, we will.

** Judge orders restoration of DACA, opening immigration program to new applicants for first time since 2017

"A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to fully restore an Obama-era initiative that protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation, requiring officials to open the program to new applicants for the first time since 2017.

Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to post a public notice by Monday that states the department will accept and adjudicate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) petitions from immigrants who qualify for the program but are not currently enrolled in it.

Garaufis also instructed officials to grant approved applicants work permits that last for two years, instead of the one-year period proposed by the Trump administration over the summer."

** Trump Deporting More Black Asylum Seekers Before He Leaves Office: Report

Critics feel that prior to the election, ICE ramped up deportations and abuse among Black asylum seekers, as an estimated 16,000 immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa are being held in detention centers across the U.S.

"As Donald Trump ([link removed][UNIQID]) ‘s power wanes across the globe, a new report by the Los Angeles Times ([link removed][UNIQID]) dives into an increase in ICE deportations for Black asylum seekers from Caribbean and African countries.

The Times spoke to several asylum seekers who shared reported instances of abuse, neglect and coercion, while also requesting anonymity out of fear.

Trump’s history and past comments ([link removed][UNIQID]) about Black communities and countries make it evident they don’t rank high on his list, especially in terms of providing civility. Critics of his deportation policy feel that prior to the election, ICE ramped up deportations among Black asylum seekers, as an estimated 16,000 immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa are being held in detention centers across the U.S."

** African travelers could be required to pay a $15,000 bond to enter the U.S.

Prospective tourists and visitors from more than 20 countries, mostly in Africa, could pay as much as a $15,000 bond to obtain a U.S. visa under a new rule from the Trump administration.

The requirements unveiled on Tuesday, the State Department said, are designed to send "a message" to certain nations to encourage their citizens to abide by the conditions of their U.S. visas. The State Department said it selected countries whose citizens have high rates of remaining in the U.S. after their visas have expired.

Under the six-month pilot program starting December 24, U.S. consular officials could start requiring applicants for B-1 and B-2 visas who hail from the selected countries to pay a $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 bond, according to the temporary final rule ([link removed][UNIQID]) issued by the State Department.

** Federal judge strikes down Trump administration rules restricting visas for skilled workers
------------------------------------------------------------

"A federal judge threw out two rules by the Trump administration that limited the number of visas that are made available to skilled foreign workers.

The Tuesday ruling ([link removed][UNIQID]) from U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, a George W. Bush appointee, dismisses changes the administration announced in October to the H-1B visa program, which included salary requirements on firms that employed skilled workers from overseas and placed new limits on specialty occupations. Officials defended the move as necessary because of the number of jobs lost during the coronavirus pandemic and estimated that roughly a third of H-1B visa applications would be denied.

White ruled that the administration failed to properly follow transparency procedures and that its claims that the changes were an emergency response to the pandemic’s economic fallout were unsubstantiated since the October rule was implemented after months of speculation."
