In this important moment for humanity, community, and Mother Earth, I am asking for your help, John.
We have a huge opportunity right now to help nominate a fierce advocate for Indigenous peoples and the climate to a key position in the Biden Administration.
For years, the Department of the Interior has prioritized the demands of the energy and extractive industries over the needs of everyday people, Indigenous nations, and the planet. It’s time for change.
That’s why Native Organizers Alliance is proud to partner with 350.org to endorse Rep. Deb Haaland, an enrolled citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, to be the next Secretary of the Interior.
Over 120 Indigenous Tribal leaders have called on the Biden Administration to appoint Haaland to the post, but it will take a massive grassroots campaign to reach President-elect Biden and win this nomination.
So now we must plan and organize, not just politically, but also with the determination, strength, and courage to demand Indigenous voices help to lead the fight against the climate crisis. Tribal leadership and Native communities are the keys to winning this struggle, so I am asking:
Rep. Deb Haaland has been a fierce advocate and organizer in Indian Country for decades. In addition, her work in the House Natural Resources Committee has proven that she will serve the interests of all people, dedicate herself to preserving public lands, and honor Nation-to-Nation relations with tribes.
The Department of the Interior oversees public lands, manages Indian Trust funds, and houses the Bureau of Indian Affairs, but there has never been a Native member of a U.S. President’s Cabinet.
Rep. Haaland’s nomination would not only reverse the damage done by the Trump Administration and their unrelenting efforts reduce environmental protections on our public lands and undermine tribal sovereignty, but also signal an acknowledgement of the enormous role Indigenous people play in combating climate change.
Together, we can ensure that Indigenous women and climate activists like Rep. Haaland are the voices leading our government and fighting for our planet. Thank you again for your help today.
Hawwih,
