Man arrested as police seize 31,000 cigarettes and £16,000 in Hemel Hempstead

More than £16,000 in cash and over 30,000 cigarettes were seized after police officers arrested a man in Hemel Hempstead. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs (cocaine), profiting from or concealing knowledge of proceeds of crime, handling stolen goods and criminal damage, a spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police said. He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

"The arrest occurred just after 1.30pm on Monday, November 30, after officers from the borough’s Operation Scorpion team responded to a call from a member of the public reporting suspicious activity in the Boxmoor area," the spokesperson said.

Officers stopped and searched a vehicle where they found £14,100 in cash. Officers also searched a Boxmoor address where they recovered £2,000 in cash along with 1,550 packets of cigarettes – equivalent to 31,000 individual cigarettes. The cash, cigarettes and car were all seized as part of the investigation.

UK gambling laws review to consider ban on sports sponsorship

A wide-ranging review of gambling laws to be launched next week will consider banning sports sponsorship and limiting online casino stakes among a “reformer’s shopping list” of proposals to overhaul gambling laws, the Guardian can reveal. The long-awaited review, which could roll back vast swathes of the Gambling Act 2005, will begin as soon as Monday with an initial call for evidence.

The broad scope is likely to welcomed by advocates for tighter regulation, including people recovering from problem gambling and more than 50 MPs and peers who have backed stricter controls. But the prospect of a much harsher regulatory climate will be of concern to online casino bosses and bookmakers.

Multiple sources said officials at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which is leading the process, would take aim at almost every area of gambling law, in what one insider termed a “reformer’s shopping list”. Sources also said the review would also consider marketing and advertising, including the possibility of new measures to curb sports sponsorship – including logos on football club shirts – in an apparent response to the “gamblification” of football.

Promotional offers are also expected to form part of the review’s scope, indicating that the government is not satisfied with a joint effort by the industry and the Gambling Commission to address concerns about VIP schemes, bonuses and so-called “free bets”. VIP schemes, in which gamblers who lose large amounts of money are wined, dined and given financial incentives to keep betting, have been a common feature of high-profile stories about problem gamblers who resorted to crime or took their own lives.

Webinar: Do mental health professionals have the training they need to tackle smoking?

Equally Well and the Mental Health and Smoking Partnership are hosting a joint webinar looking at the role of training in equipping staff in mental health services to tackle tobacco dependency among service users. The event will see the launch of a new report on training among psychiatrists and mental health nurses undertaken by public health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). This looks at the levels of training among staff currently, gaps in skills and knowledge and identifies how this can be addressed as part of securing a meaningful change in how people accessing mental health care are supported to address their tobacco dependency.

The webinar will take place on 16 December at 11.05-12.20
