Teaching Developmentally Appropriate Sexual Health Education for Special Education Students
|
|
Research shows that students with intellectual/developmental disabilities are five times more likely to be sexually molested or assaulted, are less likely to understand or report the incident, and are less likely to be believed. Because of this, many states are now requiring comprehensive sexual health education for secondary students. Sample individual and small group learning strategies, motivational interviewing, handling self‐disclosure of abuse and instructional resources will be discussed. This course was originally presented at Virtual NASN2020 and is now available in the NASN Learning Center.

School Nurses on Frontlines to Provide Grief Education
|
Grief and trauma following a death is destabilizing for children and, when left unaddressed, can result in problems including increased anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress reactions, aggression, academic struggles, and relationship issues. This workshop is designed to provide grief and trauma education and awareness, along with suggestions that will assist school professionals in supporting students while fostering growth and resilience. This course was originally presented at Virtual NASN2020 and is now available in the NASN Learning Center.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Extending Free Meals
|
|
Did you know the USDA is extending free meals to children for the rest of the 2020-2021 school year? Regardless of household income, all children can access free and nutritious school breakfast and lunch each day. Participation in school meal programs is important for several reasons:
- School meals help address the increased food insecurity many families are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- School meal programs allow children to have access to nutritious foods
- Students who eat school meals have better overall diet quality than students who do not.
- More participation in school meal programs means more funding for school nutrition programs.
Use the USDA’s toolkit to help spread the word.

National Handwashing Awareness Week is Coming Up
|
|
- WASH your hands when they are dirty and BEFORE eating.
- DO NOT cough into your hands.
- DO NOT sneeze into your hands.
- Above all, DO NOT put your fingers into your eyes, nose, or mouth.
NASN Resources: NASN has created several educational videos on hygiene -- including handwashing -- for school nurses as they return-to-school during COVID-19. School nurses can use these as a tool to educate the school community including students, staff, and parents. See the videos and share them with your school community.
