John, this week President Barack Obama said political candidates lose support when using “snappy” slogans like “defund the police.”

With all due respect, Mr. President defunding the police isn’t a “snappy” slogan. It’s a mandate for keeping our people alive.

We lost Michael Brown, Jr. We lost Breonna Taylor. And there are countless more Black lives lost to police violence that don’t make national headlines. Political movements like the fight for Black lives are demanding real change. Defunding the police is a call for divesting from the criminalization of our communities and investing instead in the social services that actually keep our communities safe.

This is what I’ve been fighting for since Ferguson in 2014. It’s why I ran for Congress — to stand with community, to fight the tough but necessary fights, to protect our very lives.

We won on November 3 fighting for Black lives, but we need the resources to continue building our grassroots movement. Can you make a contribution right now of whatever you can afford to keep up that fight on the ground? [[link removed]]

Every life lost at the hands of a police officer is a reminder to me and every Black person that we could be next. That our child could be next. That a loved one could be next. But together, we can extinguish that fear instilled in us by an institution that has disproportionately targeted members of our community for far too long.

Together we won a historic election — but we have to continue working every single day to protect Black lives. Help us keep funding that fight on the ground right now with a contribution today. [[link removed]]

In solidarity,

Cori Bush
