The Global Climate Strike, initiated by youth from around the world, is another opportunity to rally our communities in solidarity -- and in our own interests! The momentum behind the strike reflects the growing awareness of the urgency for governments to commit to action. In the U.S., actions are directed to the Administration's hostile posture towards addressing climate change, calling on bold action, such as the proposal for a Green New Deal, and a commitment to engage with the rest of the world in confronting this significant issue of our time. Tomorrow's strike kicks off weeklong activities throughout the world, planned to send a strong message to world leaders and governments meeting during the United Nations' General Assembly in a "Climate Summit" on Monday, Sept. 23 in New York. Hundreds of activities are scheduled in New York, prior to and after the Summit, calling attention to climate issues and intersections -- with development, with labor, with gender -- and with migration. NNIRR will be joining US and international colleagues in some of these events, where we are using the opportunity to better understand linkages, build alliances and strategize -- together -- on how we can impact climate change AND advance rights and protections for the growing multitude of populations displaced by climate factors.

While the majority of climate displacement takes place within countries, increasingly more people are being forced to move beyond borders for safety and survival. Among those displaced are many of the Central American migrants who have come to the U.S. seeking asylum. They have been arrested, detained, and repelled by the Trump Administration -- dismissed as "very tough people" who are trying to scam the asylum protection system.
