The 2020 election is finally behind us, and we are nearing the close of one of the most difficult years in recent memory. Despite the challenging conditions, hundreds of people in Fresno County stepped forward to volunteer or donate to help elect Democrats this year. Whether you assisted the state party’s Coordinated Campaign, the local party, any of the Democratic campaigns or an outside group working on our behalf or to engage voters generally, thank you for that effort. Your contribution was valuable and greatly appreciated.

I would like to recognize two individuals who made extraordinary contributions to the local party. Brian Bobbitt, aka “the Sign Guy,” helped numerous campaigns with putting out their signs, monitoring those sign placements for vandalism and retrieving those signs post-election. He also maintained and upgraded the local Democratic Party HQ. You’ll want to check it out post-pandemic.
And there is Francis Horan. You have received this newsletter throughout the election cycle because Francis put in many hours for each issue gathering information to include and developing content from his own research.

—Ruben Zarate, Chair, Fresno County Democratic Party

The November election was a hard fought battle, but Democrats in Fresno County have many things to be proud of. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won our county handily, while Jim Costa defended his House of Representatives seat and Dr. Joaquin Aramula was reelected to the State Assembly. We congratulate all the endorsed Democrats who won their elections across Fresno County:

Joe Biden might have won the presidency, but the Democratic caucus in Congress currently only has 48 members compared to the Republicans’ 50. A 50-50 split would allow Vice President Kamala Harris to cast the deciding vote and give the Democratic Party a thin level of control over Congress.

Without that Democratic majority, we know what Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s Republican Party will do: the exact same thing they did during Obama’s presidency. The Republican Party will refuse to compromise on anything and will paralyze Congress, allowing nothing meaningful to happen at a time where the country is in a life-or-death need for meaningful action.

Our country is in crisis. President Joe Biden can staunch the bleeding, but to actually fix most of the problems we face requires legislation and legislation requires a cooperative Senate.

Victory for Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff would mean things have a chance to get better.

The Democratic Party of Georgia is working hard for those two runoff elections and needs support: www.georgiademocrat.org/take-action/.

Covid-19 cases are skyrocketing across the country, worse than it was during shelter-in-place periods last spring. So remember, for the health and prosperity of all those around you, wear a mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing and reduce your incidents of contact with people who do not dwell in your home. A quarter of a million Americans have died from this pandemic. That number is sure to rise, but we can do our part to limit that climb.

The more of us who restrict ourselves now, the less time we will have to do so, and the more lives will be saved.

The Democratic Party HQ is closed during December but the work of the Democratic Party continues. Call 559-495-0606 (tel:559-495-0606) or email
