John,
In 2018 over 663,000 people were arrested for marijuana-related crimes, and according to a report by the ACLU, Black Americans are 3.6 times more likely to be arrested than white Americans despite similar consumption rates. That’s why Our Revolution has worked hard to overturn marijuana prohibition on the state level, and why we are joining forces with NORML to help pass a bill in the House on Friday to decriminalize marijuana nationally! Our Revolution groups fought hard to pass marijuana legalization proposals in Arizona and New Jersey, and now we need to demand that Congress does the same thing nationally. Click here to write your legislator and demand they vote to decriminalize marijuana!
Not only is marijuana’s demonized status a tool for racial oppression, but a path toward decriminalization is the rare issue in America that is supported by a majority of both Democrats AND Republicans. A Data for Progress survey “found that 59 percent of Americans—including 53 percent of Republicans and 70 percent of Democrats—favor the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act.” Tell your Congressperson that it’s time to end the systemic racism of marijuana prohibition before Friday’s vote. In solidarity, The whole team at Our Revolution
