Friend --
We need to pass a bipartisan COVID relief bill that meets the needs of the American people. And we need to do it now.
We all know that successfully passing legislation through Congress means that a bill must get through the Democratic House and get Democratic votes in the Senate -- passing a law takes a measure of bipartisanship and compromise.
That’s why Speaker Pelosi and I sent Mitch McConnell a new offer on a COVID bill -- it was an effort to jumpstart serious negotiations.
But instead of working with his colleagues across the aisle, Mitch McConnell announced that he would pursue a bill with simply the Republican leadership in the House and Donald Trump. He won’t have a word with Democrats.
We need a real bill, that helps real Americans, and we need it now: If you agree, add your name to tell Mitch McConnell to work on bipartisan legislation that supports ALL Americans right now.
Here’s what’s in Mitch McConnell’s COVID “relief” bill:
- Not a single dollar of unemployment assistance -- this as the economy is weakening again, uninsurance claims are climbing, and as many as 11 million children in the United States live in a household that doesn’t have enough food to eat.
- Immunity for corporations who put their workers at risk for COVID -- not a dime for anyone who lost their jobs during the pandemic, but a shield for the corporations who laid them off and got them sick. This, as more than 14 million Americans have been infected and 271,000 have died.
This is a bill so inadequate, even Republican senators call it “offensive” -- and I agree. Mitch McConnell is wasting the Senate’s time and the American people’s time on another deficient, partisan proposal.
We need to put people first: Join me in calling on Mitch McConnell to work with Democrats to pass real COVID-19 relief legislation for all Americans right now.
Sincerely,
Chuck Schumer
