Americans for Peace Now: December 2, 2020

QUOTE

"...we're going to engage in negotiations and follow-on agreements to tighten and lengthen Iran's nuclear constraints, as well as address the missile program."

President-elect Joe Biden, who also said that the US always has the option to snap back sanctions if need be, and Iran knows it. From NY Times' "Biden: 'We're Going to Fight Like Hell by Investing in America First'" [ [link removed] ]

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Jonathan Pollard (November 30, 2020) [ [link removed] ]

Q. Fakhrizadeh, a very senior Iranian nuclear scientist, was just assassinated near Tehran. Pollard spied for Israel against the US decades ago and is now not only a free man but is free to leave the US for Israel. What's the connection?

A. The links are many...

Q. Start with the fresh news: Fakhrizadeh.

A. ...the timing of this assassination, indeed the assassination itself, appear to be directed at pushing Iran toward an ever more angry and vindictive attitude regarding the nuclear issue...

Q. Where are the Arabs in all this?

A. If Iran is going to retaliate, the Saudis and Emiratis do not want to be caught in the crossfire...

Q. Those are the realpolitik aspects. But is the international media coverage of the Israel angle fair in your view?

A. Up to a point...

Q. On and on it goes. But isn't this just tedious fundamentalist propaganda that can be safely ignored, like the rantings of a few Palestinian religious figures in Gaza and Ramallah and a few West Bank settler rabbis?

A. No...

Q. Turning to Pollard, hasn't everything been written? Apropos criminal acts, Israel spied on its American strategic ally and benefactor. Apropos US-Israel security relations, US anger was and still is understandable...

A. Which is why it behooves the Netanyahu government to refrain from its usual hyper-nationalist, Holocaust-recalling rhetoric...

Q. Pollard served 30 years, far more than Americans caught spying for Russia or China.

A. ...The lessons of the Pollard affair have not been ignored or forgotten...

Hope and Determination - Letter from Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody

[ [link removed] ]

APN Board member Mandy Patinkin and his wife Kathryn Grody wrote: "We hope you will continue to stand with us, with hope and determination, to bring peace to a country and a place and a people we love."

See an excerpt below from their letter consisting of personal recollections from visiting Israel, experiences in Hebron, and more.

The main street looked like a ghost town, its crumbling buildings scarred with Hebrew graffiti: "No Arabs, No Mice." "Death to the Arabs" and worse. A nauseous sense overwhelms at the hate-filled words but even more so at the sight of all the boarded-up stores that were once a vibrant marketplace...

When I left Hebron, I went straight to the offices of Peace Now in Tel Aviv, and relief washed over me as I encountered the staff and friends of Shalom Achshav, who dedicate every day of their lives to finding peace. Their inspiration forced me to dig deep and recommit myself to find the path forward.

APN to Biden: Tell Israel to Ditch its Nation-State Law

Israel's Nation-State Law was recently used by the court as a justification to deny two Arab citizens compensation for travel to an Arab school, claiming it would hinder the Jewish character of their majority Jewish town. APN, which has vehemently opposed the law since it was introduced, calls on the incoming Biden administration to appeal to Israel to live up to its democratic vision and aspirations.
