Once again, Trump and the Republicans are holding up government funding on a racist border wall

Here we go again with Trump and the Republicans trying to fund racist initiatives through must-pass legislation.

When the Democratic House majority first came into office in early 2019, they found it fully worth fighting to keep funding for the border wall out of that year’s budget, even when it meant facing down a Republican government shutdown. That display of moral clarity and effort was one of the best things that congressional Democrats did to resist Republican oppression under Trump.

Now, again, we are facing the same issue. The Omnibus budget bill, which will fund the government for the next year, is currently stuck in negotiations. The sticking point for passage of the current Omnibus bill? Yet again, money for the border wall. ([link removed][UNIQID])

If the Omnibus bill gets hung up, it may give way to a status quo “Continuing Resolution” (CR), and in that case, border wall funding could still be at issue. Under no circumstances should Democrats appease Trump on this matter. On top of the wasteful expense, funding this wall signals to immigrant communities that Democrats are willing to abandon them.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is also being stalled on a similarly racist issue. In this case, the sticking point is the question of renaming military bases that were previously named in “honor” of Confederate officers. Trump is threatening to veto ([link removed][UNIQID]) the NDAA if it contains that provision, and McConnell is rumored to oppose passing the NDAA with this provision included because it might depress the white Republican vote in Georgia.

Democrats must not give way on this issue either. We must stand steadfastly against official government celebrations of people who turned traitor against the United States and whose cause was to uphold the system of mass oppression and enslavement of African-Americans. In fact, it is no great loss if Congress blocks the NDAA entirely. In contrast to the Omnibus bill or a CR, there is no issue of a possible government shutdown. But if the NDAA is to pass, it must include the renaming of bases currently named for Confederate traitors. After the sweeping Black Lives Matter protests this year, this requirement has support from Democrats and even some Republicans.

Call your Senators and tell them: No money for the racist border wall in the 2020 budget bill! ([link removed][UNIQID])

Indivisible SF Spotlight

The election last month was unprecedented in many ways. With historic turnout during a deadly uncontrolled pandemic, some of the results were surprising and confusing. Already, Republicans and some Democrats are spinning the results to claim that Americans aren't interested in a progressive agenda.

We disagree. One of our leaders, Bruce Hartford, a veteran of progressive movements including the Civil Rights movement, wrote an analysis on the results of the election, and how some establishment politicians aim to spin them. Read our blog post here. ([link removed][UNIQID])

Fighting to win in Georgia.

Organizations in Georgia are ramping up to register voters before the December 7 voter registration deadline for the Senate runoff. And we’re joining in! ([link removed][UNIQID]) Remember, we want to follow the lead of the community organizers on the ground in Georgia. Local organizers know what the community needs and how voters in Georgia are feeling. We must listen to them and give them the resources they need. Here’s how you can help right now:
1. Donate to Fair Fight and the candidates. Fair Fight ([link removed][UNIQID]) , led by Stacey Abrams, contributed greatly to flipping Georgia. The candidates, Jon Ossoff and Rev. Warnock, are up against Republican incumbents with the full force and funding of the Republican machine behind them. They will need a lot of money to fund their campaigns.

+ Donate to Ossoff and Warnock: [link removed][UNIQID]

2. Contact voters to get ready for the runoff. DemAction SF and the New Georgia Project have already organized some phone banks, and more will be coming.
+ Phone bank every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday ([link removed][UNIQID]) with the New Georgia Project to register voters before the December 7 registration deadline.
+ Phone Bank with DemAction SF on Saturday ([link removed][UNIQID]) .
+ Sign up with Vote Forward ([link removed][UNIQID]) for opportunities to write letters to Georgia.

3. Sign up to volunteer with local organizers. There will be plenty of opportunities to phone bank, text bank, and even canvass, but we want to make sure local Georgia organizations are leading.
+ Sign up to volunteer with Indivisible Georgia Coalition ([link removed][UNIQID]) . NOTE: please be patient for the group to respond as they are overrun with volunteers and are devising the most effective strategy.
+ Sign up with organizations such as the New Georgia Project ([link removed][UNIQID]) and Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights ([link removed][UNIQID]) to help with voter registration.
+ Learn more in this toolkit ([link removed][UNIQID]#slide=id.ga119d95688_40_0) from a local Georgia organizer.

We’ll be sending updates on how you can get involved as we get more information.
