Dear friend,

I'm thrilled to announce today's launch of NIRH's publication Protecting Reproductive Freedom in Cities and Counties During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Local Reproductive Freedom Special Report.

This pandemic has disrupted people's lives in a myriad of ways, with the burdens falling hardest on marginalized communities -- especially Black and brown women. In the face of the federal government's utter failure to effectively address the spread and harm of the virus, many cities and counties developed creative, impactful policies and practices to address the pressing needs of their communities -- including for reproductive health, rights, and justice.

The Local Index Special Report documents some of the promising policies and practices that localities across the country implemented to address the intersection of the pandemic and reproductive health, rights, and justice. Beyond that, the report provides local leaders and advocates with 10 principles to inform their response to the pandemic while protecting and even advancing reproductive freedom.

As we face the continued effects of the pandemic, we must continue to take bold action at the local level. Elected leaders and communities should dare to reimagine cities as places that ensure that every person is able to live, work, and make decisions about their health and future with dignity and economic security. The Local Index Special Report is more than just a report -- it's a roadmap for change.

I look forward to all we can accomplish together in 2021.

In solidarity,
Andrea Miller
