Have you heard the great news? The UK government announced it will end sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030 - 10 years earlier than planned. [1] It's a major win for the climate, as polluting cars and vans are responsible for around one-fifth of all carbon emissions in the UK. [2]

 

But, if we're going to cut emissions further and make transport fair and accessible for everyone, the government must make it easier for people to get about without a car by improving public transport, and walking and cycling infrastructure.

 

Will you join over 100,000 people and urge the government to take the next step by fixing our transport system, instead of spending billions of pounds on more roads?

The government is making big decisions on what to spend money on - we need to make sure that money isn't wasted building more roads. There are lots of reasons why this is a really bad idea, but in short: it will only create more traffic [3], more air pollution, more emissions, and destroy nature. [4]

 

Ending sales of new petrol, diesel and dirty hybrid cars and vans means we're a step closer to improving transport in the UK, but it won't fix everything. [5]

 

If all we do is replace polluting cars with zero carbon ones, we'll miss the opportunity to break the UK's dependence on cars. What we need is for the government to completely overhaul our transport system.

 

Tell the government that we want massive investment in greener, fairer and more affordable transport, not more polluting roads. If they listen, our transport system won't just work for me and you but the planet and future generations:

Right now, walking, cycling or taking public transport is not possible for a lot of people. If you live outside a major city it's likely that there's no choice but to drive. And while we are still in a pandemic people are also understandably hesitant to get back on buses and trains - meaning more people may choose to drive.

 

But once the pandemic's over, we're going to need a transport system that works for everyone. It's going to be crucial to building better, healthier communities - especially as we recover from the recession. It's also one of the best things we can do as a country to bring our climate emissions down and start tackling the climate crisis.

 

It will improve the air we breathe, and keep nature and wildlife safe from more motorways - it just makes sense.
