The Weaponization of Whiteness in Schools

Studies show that when educators perceive challenges to their power, they disproportionately view Black students as the source. In the Fall 2020 issue of Teaching Tolerance magazine, Senior Writer Coshandra Dillard writes about why it’s time to recognize the pattern of educators weaponizing their whiteness in schools and put a stop to it.

Our newest One World poster was created by Chicago designer Adé Hogue, who originally approached this piece simply, but then a scanner mishap changed everything. “The [poster] is now a collage of a hand drawn lettering piece that has been scanned and manipulated on the scanner bed,” Hogue says. “I think it helps amplify the many times we’ve felt we need to shout this phrase.”

Immigrant and refugee students and families remain under threat. In a feature story for our Fall magazine issue, Teaching Tolerance Senior Writer Cory Collins reports on the nationwide movement to ensure that all students and families feel safe and welcomed by their schools. Read to learn how your school can do the same.

“The best young adult, middle grade and children’s books published this year tell stories of resolving conflict, finding unity and overcoming adversity.” — TIME

“In a year marked by historic uprisings in support of Black lives, these Black Native Americans say now is the time to acknowledge their rights, too.” — NBC News

“All this fall, as vehement debates have raged over whether to reopen schools for in-person instruction, teachers have been at the center — often vilified for challenging it, sometimes warmly praised for trying to make it work. But the debate has often missed just how thoroughly the coronavirus has upended learning in the country’s 130,000 schools, and glossed over how emotionally and physically draining pandemic teaching has become for the educators themselves.” — The New York Times
