GOV. LUJAN GRISHAM’S COUNTY-BY-COUNTY TIERED REOPENING PLAN IS MERELY AN ILLUSION GIVING PUBLIC FALSE HOPE IN CRISIS

Gov. Lujan Grisham’s proposed 3-tier red, yellow and green light plan to systematically reopen New Mexico is nothing more than a colorful mirage. With New Mexicans more desperate than ever and thirsty for the state to get back to normal, the plan appears to offer hope, but it won’t work.

The 3-tier system is based on spread rates, but experts explain that based on rising rates, it will take more than seven months just to get red counties into the yellow. With the soaring COVID-19 rates, one local biostatistician noted that statewide we are far from meeting needed requirements: “You’ll expect to be in the red…for 20 to 30 weeks,” according to expert Hubert Allen.

That’s more than 7 months with school closed, and businesses and churches at 25% capacity!

Another major flaw is revealed when looking at what the mirage of green status actually accomplishes. Even if a county turns green, most businesses can still only operate at 50%.

The Governor’s Office even knows the plan is not feasible and is already ready to shift blame to Republicans. Spokesman Tripp Stelnicki told KOB-TV that Republicans “have been demanding exactly this county-by-county framework” and asked the media to “hold them accountable.”

“The governor has failed the state since March. Period. Yes, she should have assessed where the worst problems were and taken appropriate action back then, but it’s very late now,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “Other states have learned to live with the virus and have opened up schools, churches and businesses. Instead, our governor has punished New Mexico, collapsing its economy, closing businesses and pushing thousands to the unemployment lines. The damage is done. The governor’s inequitable actions have been unscientific and unconstitutional. This new tier system is a mirage, and even experts admit it’s not viable. I do know that hope is fading fast in New Mexico.”

GOVERNOR SIGNS MASSIVE PANDEMIC RELIEF PACKAGE, BUT IT’S ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX

Gov. Lujan Grisham has signed a $330 million pandemic relief package--$319 million of which will come from CARES Act federal funding—after the legislature approved the bill during last week’s Special Session. The bill received bipartisan support as lawmakers authorized $194 million to assist New Mexico’s unemployed, $100 million in business grants and $15 million in housing assistance. Funds would also go to food banks and COVID-19 vaccine distribution and contact tracing efforts.

This relief is welcomed and will help many New Mexicans who have suffered as a result of the governor’s poor choices in addressing the pandemic. Still, this is band-aid approach and only a quick fix. The Administration must find a long-term solution that will repair our badly damaged economy and suffering state.

“It’s imperative that New Mexico provide these funds to its residents who are hurting, suffering and in desperate need of help due to the pandemic,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “This assistance will help for a while, but the legislation is simply too little too late. There’s never been a long-term strategy to get New Mexicans and their businesses back on their feet. The governor’s lockdowns and random decisions continue to kill our economy, and New Mexico’s virus rates are still among the worst in the nation. The governor’s Administration has never seen the big picture.”
