Steven Tendo is an ordained minister and human rights activist detained by ICE for nearly two years — and is now facing imminent deportation back to Uganda, where he is in danger of being killed.
Like so many human rights activists around the world, Pastor Steven was forced to flee his home. He escaped to the U.S. to request asylum after being tortured by government forces in Uganda who amputated two of his fingers, detained him more than a dozen times, and murdered his family members.
Recently, when he was informed he would be deported, Amnesty sprang into action and drove thousands of calls and emails to ICE — and together, we were able to get ICE to temporarily suspend his deportation. But he’s still behind bars — and trying to survive detention during a deadly pandemic.
