2020 has seen ever-increasing threats to uncontacted tribes, some of the world’s most vulnerable peoples. There have been fires in their territories in the Amazon rainforest, many set by illegal loggers looking to clear the land. They face extreme discrimination from anti-indigenous Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has fought to strip indigenous peoples of their autonomy, and sell off their territories for logging and mining. Under his administration, an area of Amazon rainforest the size of a soccer field is being destroyed every minute.
And this year, COVID-19 poses an extreme threat to uncontacted peoples, who could face complete annihilation if exposed to the virus by those illegally in their territories.
