John,

The moment I heard about the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, I knew my wife Mary – the school psychologist – would be in the middle of it.

That's just the way she was.

That morning, I tried to call her, but there was no answer – so I raced to the school as fast as I could. I found someone who had been in a meeting with Mary when the shooting started.

They told me she immediately ran out toward the sound of gunfire – and never came back. Mary would do anything for her students, even if it meant putting herself in danger – and that day, she gave her life to save theirs.

Now, I've dedicated my life to making Mary proud by protecting children from gun violence in her honor. But we might not be able to work fast enough to prevent the next tragedy unless we secure every dollar of this $650,000 match before Giving Tuesday ends at midnight – and we're still very short of our goal. Please, I'm personally asking: Will you donate right now to double your impact and protect more children from gun violence?

Please give $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise right now. Every dollar of your tax-deductible donation will go twice as far toward preventing the next tragedy and protecting more children from gun violence.

Early on that day, deep down, I knew things weren't good. But I didn't want to accept it. I kept hoping that what I'd heard was wrong. I kept hoping I would find Mary in the crowd at the firehouse where they had us waiting.

It wasn't until nearly two days later when I woke up, alone, that I finally realized this was how it was going to be – Mary was gone forever. I lost it.

Every single day without Mary is still hard – but we're doing everything we can to make her proud of us. Thank you for helping me honor her by protecting kids like the ones she gave her life to save that terrible day.
