Over the past two years, we have become increasingly involved in efforts to develop real and lasting solutions to the growing tragedy of homelessness in our communities. And during the holiday season, as we turn to the warmth of our own homes, the need of those experiencing homelessness is especially starkly apparent.

How Did Homelessness Get So Out of Control?

On this #GivingTuesday, we ask you to join the Independent Institute in our Campaign for Housing and Human Dignity ([link removed]) to develop and promote innovative solutions to end the homelessness crisis in California—and beyond.
Government policies have made homelessness worse.

In California, failed state and local government policies have fueled an increase in homelessness by 31% since 2015. Government spending has increased into the billions, yet homelessness continues to grow even more steeply than spending. Clearly, the policy status quo is not working. Thus, our initiative to boldly advance innovative solutions that promote freedom, responsibility, and dignity.

What Are We Doing to Solve Homelessness?

In the spirit of Tocqueville, the Independent Institute is partnering with a new coalition to move ideas into impact in restoring our communities and help countless individuals and families achieve their full potential. In early 2021, our Campaign for Housing and Human Dignity will launch with the following:
* Producing Pathbreaking Research Into the Causes of Homelessness. We are finalizing an in-depth, peer-reviewed Independent Policy Report analyzing the causes of homelessness and laying out bold solutions, including examples of successful alternative approaches.

* Putting Ideas Into Action in San Francisco. Independent is the designated policy partner for an exciting new coalition of 30 for- and non-profit organizations developing a market-based path out of homelessness. This will serve as a model for communities across the country.

* Amplifying Our Findings and Solutions Through Entrepreneurial Marketing and Promotion. In addition to utilizing social media platforms, the Independent Institute moves our research to impact by securing feature stories, interviews, and op-eds across major online, broadcast and print media outlets, as well as virtual events (and hopefully again soon, in-person!)

* Producing a High-Impact Documentary on Homelessness to Reach Many Millions of People. Working with our partners at Emergent Order, we will produce a compelling 30-minute documentary presenting our findings and recommendations through narrative-driven storytelling.

Your partnership with us in this critical initiative will enable us to positively impact lives and communities across California—and beyond. Rolling out in early 2021, please join with us! Click below to learn more and donate to the campaign today to help bring new solutions to reality.
