I dread today, John.

The first day of December marks the beginning of a cruel countdown to Dec. 14, filled with reminders of all the "lasts" that I had with my sweet little Daniel before he was murdered. The last time we all cut down a Christmas tree as a family. The last time we baked Christmas cookies together. The last time I saw my son alive.

I never saw those "lasts" coming. I've spent eight years replaying all those moments in my head, and my heart breaks all over again each and every time.

The agony of his absence never gets any easier – and it feels especially unbearable during these weeks. But no matter how painful it is, I force myself to push through because I have a moral responsibility to make sure no other parent has to live the same never-ending loop of cruel reminders that their child is gone forever.

And this Giving Tuesday, I need your help. Reaching our $650,000 match goal by midnight is crucial to our efforts to protect more children from gun violence – but right now, we're still very short. So please, can I count on you to give now to have your donation doubled to save more children like Daniel?

Please give $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise immediately to have your tax-deductible gift go twice as far toward protecting children from gun violence.

Without Daniel, the holidays will never be the same for me and my family. I remember he used to run out onto the driveway, sometimes barefoot on the cold pavement, to give his cousins a big hug when they arrived for the celebration. He loved his family so much.

I'll never get the chance to create new memories with Daniel. But with your help, we can keep working every day to make sure other parents don't have to feel the constant pain I do. Thank you for helping us keep this work going, and for helping me honor my sweet little Daniel.

Mark Barden (Daniel's father)
