This month is really, really hard for me, John.

Dec. 14 marks eight years since my beautiful butterfly Dylan was murdered. There are simply no words to express how much I miss him.

I often try to minimize my pain, but the loss of a child is just incomparable. It's a feeling that part of you – your inner "you," your soul – has been slashed from your existence. And no matter what I do – even as I work to prevent other tragedies and save lives – I know I will never get Dylan back. The hole in my heart can never be filled.

But this mission comes before me, and it's my responsibility now to make sure no other parent has to live with this unbearable pain – with a heart that never stops bleeding.
