Dear
John,
There are many wonderful opportunities for contributing today on
#GivingTuesday. But I can't imagine one more effective than when
you take advantage of our special match where your gift to end
blinding trachoma will be doubled!

Your gift will help people like Rakia. This young mother who lives in
a remote village in Niger had scarring inside her eyelids from
trachoma, putting her at risk of blindness, like so many others in her
village. She was worried about what the future held if she
couldn't recover and agreed to let a Carter Center-trained
surgeon correct the problem with a simple operation.
Trachoma is the world's leading cause of preventable blindness.
It's a bacterial infection found in poor, isolated communities
that lack clean water and adequate sanitation. It's transmitted
by secretions that stick to hands and faces, are left on fabrics, and
are carried from person to person by flies. Repeated infections lead
to scarring like Rakia's that turns the eyelashes inward,
resulting in painful scratches on the cornea and, eventually,
blindness. Women and children are most at risk.
YOUR GIFT WILL GO TOWARD A
PROVEN STRATEGY CALLED SAFE.
* Simple eyelid Surgery
* Distribution of Antibiotics
* Education on Facial cleanliness
* Environmental improvements like latrines
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT NOW »

Trachoma can be treated with antibiotics and surgery. And it can be
prevented by education and hygienic improvements that reduce fly
populations. Combined, these interventions form what's called
the SAFE strategy.
Today, when you make a #GivingTuesday gift to end blinding trachoma
in Mali and Niger, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation will match your
gift, doubling its reach. Your gift will go twice as far to help Rakia
and others like her keep their sight to see their children and
grandchildren.
For more than 35 years, The Carter Center has demonstrated that
people can improve their own lives when provided with the necessary
skills, knowledge, and access to resources. This is why the SAFE
strategy is so effective, and it is how Ghana recently became
completely trachoma free. Now Mali and Niger are working to defeat
this disease. People like Rakia need your help today.
So that we can make the greatest impact possible, please be generous
and donate before the end of #GivingTuesday. Thank you for helping
people escape and avoid blinding trachoma.
Sincerely,
Jimmy Carter
