Friend,
This week is the most intense week of the year for me as a beekeeper. I am extracting the honey-filled frames from the hives. I nearly always get stung at least once but I think the record was 14 times when I made a rookie mistake. Just like campaigning, the learning curve is steep.
I do leave plenty of honey for the bees - about 100 pounds in each hive - so that they have food for the winter. Right now, we have thousands of bees feasting on mint and the flowers from late-blooming Japanese Pagoda trees. Bees use the pollen from millions of flowers to make honey and to support the queen. It is really important to keep pollinators alive and flourishing because entire ecosystems rely on them.
I am working with my local community to ban herbicides, insecticides and pesticides which are known carcinogens and neurotoxins. We have to protect the bees and ourselves from industries that are harming our environment.
I am also marching at the Colorado Climate March this Friday. Please join me tomorrow at Union Station in Denver at 11:00am or join any march near you!
In Solidarity,
Diana
