Hi John,

Each year on December 1st, World AIDS Day, I take a moment to honor the activists who have worked for nearly four decades to bring awareness to the HIV pandemic. From the moment we first began to understand HIV and AIDS, young people have been leaders in the movement to ensure that everyone has access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care, and that no one experiences stigma or criminalization because of their HIV status. And they continue to do that work every day.

This World AIDS Day we are also weathering another pandemic, and here too, young people are at the forefront of activism. During the pandemic, young people never stopped organizing. Here are just a few of their achievements:

• Creating resources and mutual aid groups to support their peers during COVID
• Leading protests as police violence took lives around the country
• Banding together to ensure everyone has access to abortion regardless of who’s on the Supreme Court or in the White House
• Turning out in massive numbers to vote out the disastrous Trump administration.

That’s the tip of the iceberg. And Advocates for Youth’s staff worked throughout the year to support their efforts, through resources, trainings, one-on-one advising, and community building.

This Giving Tuesday, there is reason to be hopeful that 2021 will bring some progress. But we all know the work isn't done. Advocates and its youth activists will hold the Biden Administration accountable for its promises. We will not rest until all young people are safe, valued, and supported.
