Dear friends,
Today is #GivingTuesday, when people from all over the world show their support for the causes that matter to them. Your donations this year helped us advocate for autistic people’s rights to receive healthcare [[link removed]] , vote [[link removed]] , and live in our communities [[link removed]] free from abuse and violence [[link removed]] . We are determined to continue the fight — can we count on you to join us? [[link removed]]
Because of your support this year, we have been able to:
- Welcome and celebrate FDA’s ban on electric skin shock devices [[link removed]] after years of concerted advocacy.
- Collaborate with other groups to issue guidance on disability discrimination [[link removed]] in COVID treatment and on access to supporters in hospitals, influencing several states to change their pandemic response [[link removed]] to ban discrimininatory health care rationing.
- Create accessible toolkits like A Self-Advocate’s Guide to the Americans with Disabilities Act [[link removed]] and Voting By Mail resources [[link removed]] to ensure that all people with disabilities have the information they need to engage in our democracy.
- Demand justice for Black autistic people, including filing a joint statement of concern regarding Matthew Rushin [[link removed]] , calling for full pardon for Neli Latson [[link removed]] , and putting out a plain language explainer on police violence [[link removed]] and anti-Black racism.
- Debut Welcome to the Autistic Community, [[link removed]] an accessible resource for autistic people who want to learn what being autistic means, and for non-autistic people to learn how to make life better for autistic people.
And as always, continue to fight for the rights of all people with disabilities : our right to access health care, our right to communicate, and our right to live in the community.
This year, consider making a #GivingTuesday donation to ASAN to continue to help empower self-advocacy and the autistic community. Can we count on your support? [[link removed]]
You can also support us by tweeting us to get your profile picture decked out with some self-advocacy pride [[link removed]] , or reposting our Instagram story [[link removed]] and sharing why you support our work! Another great way to support us today is with a Facebook fundraiser [[link removed]] ! They’re easy to set up and share with your friends [[link removed]] , and you don’t have to contribute yourself if you’re not able to.
We’re thrilled that we have been able to serve our community in so many ways this year, but the fight is not over. Until all people with disabilities have full inclusion and equal rights, we have more work to do — and we can’t do it without you. With your help, we can raise funds that will allow us to continue to create accessible resources, foster autistic leadership, make sure everyone can participate in civic engagement, and so much more. Let’s keep the work going together!
With thanks,
Team at ASAN
